Client FAQ

Can I color my extensions at home?
No — we don’t recommend coloring, bleaching or toning at home. Extensions process differently than natural hair and can turn brassy, muddy, or darker than expected. Always have your stylist tone or color match for you.

Why do extensions sometimes turn purple when colored?
Extension hair is more porous than natural hair and grabs cool pigments faster. Popular ashy toners with violet or blue bases can over-deposit and create a purple hue. A trained stylist knows how to adjust formulas and timing so you get the perfect tone (without over-processing).

Can I use purple shampoo on my extensions?
Proceed with caution. Purple shampoo can quickly over-deposit on extensions because extension hair is more porous than natural hair. What looks like a soft tone on your natural hair can easily turn your extensions very purple or muddy.

If you’re going to use purple shampoo, it should be:

  • stylist recommended

  • diluted

  • used occasionally, not every shampoo

For routine brass control, we recommend hydrating extension-safe products and leaving toning decisions to your stylist so your extensions stay bright, blended, and balanced, not dull or lavender.

Can I swim in my extensions?
We do not recommend swimming in extensions. Water (especially chlorine + salt water) can dry out the hair quickly and can change how the hair feels after. Even with protection, there are no guarantees your hair will feel the same once you get out.

If you must swim, here’s the safest approach:

  • apply a leave-in conditioner to saturate the hair first (so salt/chlorine absorb less)

  • put hair in a secure loose braid to prevent tangling

Some clients choose to wear a swim cap — but caps are typically small and can be difficult to fit over longer or fuller installs.

Swimming is always “at your own risk” with extensions.
Protect the hair as much as possible, but please understand that water exposure can still alter the feel + condition of the extensions.

Does sunscreen affect extensions?
Yes — sunscreen can stain extensions. Many sunscreens contain avobenzone and other UV-blocking ingredients that react with hair and can turn extensions brassy, yellow, or even a pinkish/orange tone.

To protect your extensions:

  • avoid getting sunscreen directly on your hair

  • apply sunscreen first, then wash your hands before touching your hair

  • use mineral-based sunscreens when possible (physical blockers like zinc oxide & titanium dioxide are safer around hair)

If you swim or sweat with SPF on, always rinse and cleanse your extensions afterward so product doesn’t sit on them and oxidize.

What to do if sunscreen or mineral buildup discolored your extensions

  • Start with a clarifying shampoo or chelating treatment (only by your stylist) to remove mineral/sunscreen residue.

  • Use a professional-grade “wefts & extensions” remedy (like Malibu C or similar) that specifically says it removes discoloration and buildup from wefts & extensions.

  • After the residue is removed, your stylist may need to re-tone the extensions if the hue is off (but success depends on how deep the staining is).

  • Important: Once a sunscreen chemical reaction has stained the hair fiber, full corrective results are not always guaranteed.

  • Prevention is always better: minimize contact of chemical sunscreens with extensions, use mineral SPF when possible, rinse hair after swimming/sweating with SPF.

Can I sleep with wet hair extensions?
No — extensions should always be fully dried before bed. Sleeping with damp hair can cause tangling, matting, and swelling at the seam.

When you sleep, we recommend:

  • brushing your hair gently before bed

  • securing it in a loose braid or loose low ponytail

  • using a silk pillowcase (to reduce friction + keep moisture in the hair)

Many clients also love doing heatless styling at night — it protects the hair, preserves curl patterns longer, and prevents overusing heat tools.

How long will my Peace Hair Co. extensions last?
With proper care, our extensions can last up to a year. Just like your natural hair, they will need occasional trims at maintenance appointments to keep the ends healthy. And just like real hair, they can slowly fade warm over time — this is completely normal.

Extensions are real human hair — so they will behave like your hair behaves:

  • if you style with heat often, they’ll need more moisture

  • if you color or tone, you’ll need to refresh tone occasionally

  • if you take good care of them, they’ll last longer

Your stylist will guide you on the best maintenance routine so your hair stays smooth, healthy, and beautiful throughout the life of your extensions.

How often will I need maintenance?
On average:

  • Genius Wefts: move up every 6 weeks

  • K-Tips/Micro Tips: reinstall every 8–12 weeks (2–3 months)

Your stylist will help determine the right schedule for your hair.

Do I buy new hair every time?
Not always — it depends on the method and on your preference.

Genius Wefts:
Genius Wefts are very durable and can be reused through multiple move-ups. Most clients start to repurchase around the 10 month mark simply because they love that “fresh hair” feeling and want new length + fullness. The majority repurchase somewhere between 12–14 months, and some clients (with great care + gentle maintenance products) have been able to reuse their hair for 1.5 to 2 years.

K-Tips / Micro Tips:
K-Tips can technically be reused, but each rebond requires cutting off the old bond which shortens the hair and takes time — which is why most clients choose new hair for each K-Tip re-install.

Can I return/exchange if the color is wrong?
Yes — as long as the hair is still sealed in original packaging.
Once the ties are cut or the hair is opened, we cannot accept returns or exchanges for sanitation and quality control reasons.

Is shedding normal?
Yes. You naturally shed around 100 hairs a day. When you’re wearing extensions, those hairs stay inside the attachment point. When your stylist removes or moves up your hair, those hairs come out in one appointment — which can look like a lot — but is normal.

Is it normal for extensions to feel dry sometimes?
Yes — extensions don’t receive natural scalp oils like your own hair does, so they can feel drier over time. Regular hydration is key. Use a high-quality, stylist-approved conditioner and hair masks on mid-lengths + ends (avoid the bonds/seams).

Daily lightweight oil on the mid-lengths + ends is one of the most important habits you can have.
Oil helps keep the hair soft, hydrated, smooth, and prevents dryness over time. A little every day goes a long way.

Think of your extensions like luxury fabric — the better you care for them, the better they look.

Can I work out with extensions?
Yes — but sweat can dry out the hair and can cause buildup near the attachment points if not rinsed or cared for properly. For workouts, it’s best to wear hair in a loose braid or low pony to minimize friction. After sweating, gently blow dry your roots so the moisture doesn’t sit inside the bonds or seams.

“If you’re going to use dry shampoo while wearing extensions, choose a lightweight powder or invisible mist, apply just to the roots, and avoid heavy use. Too much product or the wrong type can shorten the life of your extensions.”:

  • Brush the hair gently before application.

  • Hold the spray ~8-10 inches away and target only the root area (not the full length of the extensions).

  • Let it absorb, then lightly brush through.

  • Between washes, always maintain hydration and avoid relying solely on dry shampoo

How often should I wash my hair with extensions?
We recommend once a week or as needed (no daily washing). Over-washing strips moisture and shortens the lifespan of extensions. When you do wash, focus shampoo at the scalp and conditioner only on mid-lengths and ends. Always dry your roots completely — leaving attachment points wet can cause swelling or tension.

Can I brush extensions like normal hair?
Yes — but with intention. Use an extension-safe brush, support the top of the weft or the bond with your hand, and brush gently from the ends upward. Brush 2–3 times a day to prevent tangling and encourage smoothness. Avoid ripping through knots — slow + consistent brushing protects both your natural hair and your extensions.
